Calakmul Biosphere Reserve

The Yucatan is a part of Mexico with extremely diverse ecology, troposphere, and environments. One can find crystal clear waters, white sand beaches, coral reefs, near deserts in the eastern parts, “Cenotes” or underground rivers, caves, and also rainforest.
In the city of Campeche (Gulf side) there exists a thriving rainforest, and within its boundaries resides the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve. Unknown to most people, this ecological jewel homes a Jaguar population of more than 400. There are great variates of flora and fauna that include Poak trees, cedars, ant eaters, and even monkeys.
The Calakmul Biosphere Reserve was established in 1989; and along with the nearby Mayan Biosphere Reserve, the two form some the largest and least disturbed tracts of rainforest in the Americas north of Colombia. The reserve also homes the ancient Mayan archaeological site of Calakmul, which is one of the largest Mayan archeological sites.
