Cinco de Mayo in Cancun
Wed, May 5, 2010 at 7:10 pm
Let's face it, Cinco de Mayo is not a huge holiday in Mexico. It is mainly celebrated in the US by Mexican-Americans and the larger population; and for the record, it is not Mexican independence day. The holiday actually celebrates a famed victory the Mexican army had over the French in the Battle of Puebla, which took place on May 5, 1862. Thus, it makes sense that Puebla, Mexico is one of the only places that celebrates Cinco de Mayo.
But because of the strong US influence and the surge of American tourist that frequent the Yucatan regularly, Cancun has also taken on the tradition of celebrating Cinco de Mayo with song and drink. One such bar that celebrates in a way akin to that of the US is Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville. The restaurant offers specials on beers, margaritas, burgers and seafood.
So, if you want to have a more authentic Mexican holiday this year than just celebrating Cinco de Mayo at the local Mexican restaurant with Coronas and Fajitas, be sure to take a look at our affordable travel deals.
