Electric Vehicle Zero Race to Cancun
Wed, August 18, 2010 at 9:01 am

Four electric vehicle teams from Australia, Germany, South Korea and Switzerland are set to take part in the 80 day “Zero Race” around the world. Part of the Zero Race takes the teams through Cancun, Mexico. The idea is to complete the North American leg of the race in time for the United Nations climate conference that takes place in Cancun in late November.
The teams start in Switzerland, cross Eastern Europe into Russia, and then continue on to China. The electric vehicles are then shipped to Canada where they make their track through North America before heading back to Europe and finishing in Switzerland by January 2011. Zero Race rules stipulate each team can only charge their electric vehicles via renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, or hydroelectric power.
The race was masterminded by Louis Palmer who was the first to circumnavigate the globe in an electric vehicle. He did so by traversing more than 40 countries over the course of 18 months in his “Solar Taxi.” His mission remains the same according to a quote he recently gave, “With this race we want to show that seven billion people on this planet need renewable energy and clean mobility.” It seems Palmer's concept has always been to try and advance technologies that can be profitable for mass-production yet eco-friendly in consumer usage.
